# License Plate Game — Product Brief: Naming Research

## What This App Is

A local-first, mobile-first license plate spotting game for iOS (and eventually Android). Players spot real license plates on the road and log them — earning credit per state, competing against the clock in Time Attack, or racing through a full State Run. The app ships with a curated plate image catalog (all 50 US states, actual plate designs) so players see the real plate when they spot one, not just a state name.

The game is multiplayer co-op: friends in the same car — or across devices on the same trip — share a session and spot together. Plates spotted by one player sync to everyone in the session in real time.

### The Data Angle

Every sighting logged in the app is a real-world data point: which plates are spotted often, which are rare, which cluster geographically, how rarity shifts over time and by region. Over a large enough user base, the app becomes a longitudinal dataset for plate rarity — something no static list or hobbyist spreadsheet can replicate. The goal is to let rarity scores in the app reflect actual observed scarcity, updated as the community spots more plates.

There is a potential partnership in the works using this data, but info about that will remain close to chest until the app launches.

### Core Modes (v1)

| Mode | Hook |
|---|---|
| State Spotter | Spot all 50 states, any order, no timer |
| Any % | Speed run — how fast can you complete the map? |
| Time Attack | Spot as many as possible before the clock runs out |
| State Run | Complete one state's full plate set |

## Naming Goal

Find a name that:

1. **Doesn't collide with existing competitors** on the App Store / Google Play — no one should search your name and land on a rival first
2. **Still surfaces when people search "license plate game"** — ASO (app store optimization) should catch transient searchers without relying on an exact-match title
3. **Feels like a game**, not a utility — the competitor field skews heavily toward checklist/tracker framing; an opportunity exists in the game/sport/hunt direction
4. **Has room for the data story** — ideally the name can grow with the "rarity data over time" angle without a rebrand

### What the Popularity Data Tells Us

- **PlateSpot dominates iOS by review volume** (16K+ ratings) — it owns the "spot" vocabulary on that platform
- **Plates — Family Travel Game** is the highest-rated app in the category and is cross-platform, but its brand is squarely "family checklist travel utility," not a game
- **Android is wide open** — the top Android competitor has ~2.7★ and 240 ratings; no app has carved out meaningful ownership there
- **Most competitors are low-traction** — outside PlateSpot and Plates, the field is sparse: sub-1,000 ratings, sub-3★ averages, or brand new with zero reviews
- The **rarity/data angle is completely unclaimed** by any competitor at any popularity tier

## What We're Looking For

A name that:
- Avoids: *Plates*, *Spot/Spotting*, *Road Trip*, *License Plate Game* (as the full title)
- Could live at: `[Name]` on the App Store with "license plate" somewhere in the subtitle for ASO
- Works for both the casual road-trip player and hints at the deeper rarity/collection angle
- Is short enough to fit an app icon label cleanly (ideally ≤ 2 words)
